Who we are
What is iGEM Okinawa?
We are a team of students from Okinawa tackling social challenges through synthetic biology, developing solutions rooted in our local environment and sharing them with the world.
Who takes part?
Students gather from schools across Okinawa — including National Institute of Technology, Okinawa College (KOSEN), Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST), and the University of the Ryukyus — each bringing their own expertise and experience.
What are we aiming for?
To nurture Okinawa's next generation of scientists and connect local wisdom with global innovation — building a sustainable future through synthetic biology.

AI x Biology: Engineering phages against gastrointestinal pathogens
"We are working on developing bacteriophages that are resilient to low-pH environments, such as the inside of the stomach. In this development, we utilize a proprietary AI platform to evaluate their acid tolerance.

Our Team
Students from OIST, NIT Okinawa College, and the University of the Ryukyus — united by synthetic biology.
Wet Lab
Responsible for all experimental work — phage isolation, protein engineering, cloning, and lab validation of AI-predicted variants.
Dry Lab
Builds and runs the AI-based pipeline for predicting low-pH resistant phage protein variants. Handles computational modeling and data analysis.
Human Practice
Connects our science to society — engaging with local farmers, medical professionals, and communities to ensure our work addresses real needs.
Funding
Manages sponsorship outreach, donation campaigns, and financial planning to sustain our research and international competition entry.
Wiki / Video
Documents and communicates our research through the iGEM Wiki, promotional videos, and this website — making our work accessible to the world.
